Default power steering fail -- 3rd time in 6 months

87 951 upgraded to 89s turbo spec. 75k. DE and ClubRace use.

I am still a bit new to the 944 world, but curious why the power steering seems to be an issue on mine. I get that its a weak point, but this is getting silly.

I had some hoses replaced when i got the car last year. this year the Rack Seals failed in April -> replaced with rebuild , failed in july -> replaced with rebuilt underwarranty -> a new puddle in the garage after a race this weekend.....

Any cures? suggestions . I heard of an underpully may help, but im looking for this to be the last time for a while. I would rather not go manual rack.

Thanks
D

You're using ATF and not regular power steering fluid right

I should think its all down to the quality of the rebuild. If they just replace the seals without taking any burrs off the shaft and making sure its smooth it's going to fail real quick.

Underdrive won't help if there is an issue, not a fix.

Did you change the reservoir? An old one can let dirt in.

Is the equalizer pipe attached at both ends? That might cause an issue and they are prone to coming loose.

You could get a remanufactured one from Griffiths instead of a rebuilt, they are as close to new as you can get though $$'s.

BTW having owned my 86 from new and not having a single PS issue until after 18 years, I don't see how it can be considered a weak point.

The PS rack on my 944 lasted like 20 years, then got replaced with a reman ZF and is still good, tight, not leaking. I've heard good things about the Autozone rebuilt racks actually?

Default steering rack not weak

I have an 85.5, it has well over 250K miles. replaced steering rack twice in that time. Something else is wrong, either you are getting poorly rebuilt units, you are getting dirt into the system or some thing, they are not a weak point in my experience.

944 power steering. It is always leaking or about to leak in the near future.

I agree with de-powering. I haven't looked back. No leaks for me + lots of weight saved.

if you are racing, saving weight may matter, but you aren't saving "lots", you are saving a few pounds. removing passenger's seat will save you more weight than getting rid of PS system. However, if you are driving in town and parking the car and maneuvering at near zero speed, the power steering is quite helpful. The 944 is almost twice as heavy as my 356, which is a car that really doesn't need power steering.

Had an 83 with manual steering, the PS is MUCH appreciated. Doesn't leak.
