Default project: Supercharged 944

I know, I know, here we go again right? Another attempt at supercharging an N/A 944. "Buy a Turbo" some will say. "Drop in a V8" others will shout.

No.

I have owned my car for 3 years, previous to that my brother owned it for 9. I'm not getting rid of it. I have been working on it constantly and have made it into a fantastic track car. It's light, corners like hell, and puts a smile on my face everytime I drive it.

But it can always be better, right?

I bought the Rogue Tuning N/A-Tune. I love it. Shortly after purchase I had heard you can use it with a supercharger up to 225 hp. I surely don't need more than that. 30-40 hp is all I need. here we go.

Fast forward a few months and I track down an Eaton M90 Blower. Joshua from Rogue suggests a set of 951 injectors. I buy some, new. I also picked up an MSD HVC 2 ignition coil and an AEM UEGO wideband O2 as well as an exhaust header.

This should be fun.

Let's make some room in the engine bay:

That will do.

Lets see if this blower thingy will fit?

Yep, it fits.

I almost feel like this blower is replacing the other 4 pistons and cylinder head from the 928's 5.0 V8.

It's only day one, but i'm feeling good.

"Buy an LS1" they shouted. Pffft. Who needs "they".

Stay tuned...

Best wishes, I spent 1.5 years of my life and a chunk of $$$ with a supercharged 968, not going there again, EVER!

OK, I'm rooting for you. I s/c'd (M90) my Mazda KL engine 10 yrs ago. Used the TecGT to run the engine. I'd bite on a roots type for my 968, not as big a fan of the turbo or non-roots type s/c. My KL felt like a big v8 with instant 9psi and roughly 275 ft-lb/300+ hp at the wheels out of a 2.65l. Any encouragement I could give you let me know. I ultimately designed the system when the kit I bought (only one available at the time) turned out to not be very well designed/executed.

If all you want is 30hp, go find a 944S engine/harness/dme. It will be easier and give you that 30hp your looking for.

I have been hypocritically telling lots of 944 friends to NOT supercharge their 944, and instead buy a 951 motor and swap it in over a weekend... It was a decision I should have made the first time and should have made the second time, but here I am again hoping to save my faith in the supercharged 944 idea, with my own supercharged 944 project about to undertake "round 2" in the battle against not killing a perfectly good motor.

Anyway, good luck with it. If there's anything I can do to help just holler. And I hope that bracket you made for the blower is just to mock up alignment... That blower will rip itself away from the motor if not securely mounted with a mega beefy bracket!

well Elliot,

944 owners seem to enjoy getting themselves hurt, seriously hurt, etc.....

without ever leaving the house.

OD - Yep, talkin' 'bout you. :-)

MB968 - Thanks and I like the sounds of a big V8 feel.

Arominus - No swap for me. Motor is strong, besides I want me some blower whine.

Drift - That bracket is just tacked together. I will be beefing it up big time. Good luck on your project too.

The hardest thing I found was actually just getting everything to fit in the engine bay - Rotrex, Oil Cooler, Oil Reservoir, Intercooler plumbing, intake plumbing, etc. That Eaton looks a little close to the body - make sure you have enough clearance. I presume you will get a custom tune done? It took me a long time to get the tune right on mine.

Good luck.

Keeping my eye on this. I was looking to do the same, but after being thoroughly educated by RL folk, I put it on the back burner.

I suppose you already have the tune (which is expensive), but you'll need to upgrade the clutch apparently to deal with the extra torque. Not a trivial upgrade....

You don't need to upgrade the clutch. The s2 has the same clutch as the na and I'm running 300hp through it without issue.

A question for you supercharger guys, is there an issue with compressor surge like a turbo. I know there are bypass valves, but that seems to be more for an economy thing. This being a track car, that doesn't interest me all that much. Do I use some type of blow off valve though? I've heard turbo BOV don't work, am I missing something?

As for a tune, I am relying on Joshua at Rogue to give me a base tune and then using a wideband, the Rogue logger setup and some dyno time to really fine tune it.

You need a recirc valve so you don't just slam the throttle shut downstream of the supercharger. If you don't have his you will set up a pressure wave between the supercharger impellar and closed throttle- not good for the supercharger.

Ok, i think the stock Ford S/C setup had one. I think I can modify for use with my setup. IIRC, there is a small diaphragm that operates a smaller throttle plate that is vacuum operated. Are there other options? What about some kind of atmospheric blow off valve?

Interesting, that's good to know.
