Post Initial Reaction to Lindsey Boost Enhancer

I just picked up a second hand LBE. It is still set to its stock setting. The owner was in the process of going back to stock and was selling his APE, LBH, and 3bar.

I installed it today based on his directions (no more manual). The installation went without a hitch with the exception of some playing around for best placement for the hose and device. I also reverted to my stock banjo bolt (I already had the APE II and 3bar)

When I took out the car (86 951) for a test drive, I did not get the expected result. It actually felt like the turbo lag had increased almost to post chip levels. However, when the turbo hit, it was as strong and as fast as ever (maybe slightly faster). On a couple of occasions, the bar reading stayed at 1 for a good 2 seconds before increasing (as I said quite the lag).

The car did seem to improve over time and I need to continue to test it. Does the 951 computer have to recalculate curves like my TransAm? Is this what I experienced?

With APE II, LBE, and 3bar under WOT what RPM do you feel the turbo kick in fully (say 2 bar on the stock guage).

I am starting to question whether my restrictor bolt (custom job actually), is doing a better job than the LBE as the car feels closer to stock trim with kick in your pants turbo with lag vs. the nice early gradual turbo that I am used to since the LBE.

Suggestions, experiences, questions are all welcomed.

Rob

I have already reverted to the stock banjo bolt which does not have any restrictor. Thanks though.

That's what I am hoping for and what I initially gathered. I will keep an eye on the car over the course of this week and hope to see improvements.

Going back to one of my initial questions, when should I expect to see full boost with the combo outlined above.

Actually you can adjust the boost setting on the LBE. Presently it should be running stock...10 psi. You mentioned that your banjo bolt was a custom job, I guess that you don't know what boost dial-in you had. By loosening the LBE's body bolt and turning clock-wise, you can increase boost by 1psi increments for every full turn. By doing this you are increasing the time in which your wastegate will get it's signal causing you to hold more boost. You can have the turbo spool up quicker and fully by doing this. This should take out the lag you experience as you will realize more boost before the wastegate leaks open.

Apart from the stock 10psi setting of the LBE, what do most people set theirs to with the APE II and 3bar setup.

Unfortunately, the 951 DME/KLR is not an adaptive system (which means that the electronics does not learn anything).

So, if your boost is a problem now, it will be a problem two weeks from now and two months from now. These problems do not fix themselves.

There is a 944 turbo troubleshooting FAQ on the web somewhere, I would start by looking there...

Good luck...
