Post Tightening Trottle Cable (non Porsche)

I was just wondering if someone has any ideas for this. The cable running from the gas pedal to the trottle is loose (therefore causing some freeplay on the gas pedal). The plastic tightener is all the way. Is there any way of tightening a cable or must a new one be purchased.
The car is a 1988 325ix. (another car requiring as much attention as my 944!!...damn germans )
Thanks so much
Sorry if the non Porsche post offends anyone
