on another note: i just got some shell "formula 1" oil. i've been experiencing the "one mechanic says this and another mechanic said that" issue. on one hand the old german porsche mechanic guy insists that "mineral" oil takes the gunk out of the engine and keeps it cleaner, while saying that synthetic is good, it leaves a lot of build-up.
however the other mechanic (where i've most of my repair work done) swears by mobil 1, which was what i was using. just like most people here. what up!?
anyhow, it's hard to find 15w-50, and isn't 20w-50 for colder climate? i don't understand this stuff. the "alldata" info sheet is interesting though.

I don't know about the valve noise thing, but my mechanic always told me that synthetics would find any of even the TINIEST crevices and leak. I'd kind of like to try some Redline now, just see- i had always thought it was a lot more expensive...

I get my Redline Oil from <a href="http://www.paragon-products.com/" target="_blank">Paragon Products</a>.
I have not seen the engine oil listed on their site, but they do carry it in several weights. It is about $7.95 per quart (I think) which, even with shipping, is cheaper than I have been able to find it in Charlotte, NC.
The $4.16 per quart in Winston Salem, NC would make the drive well worth the effort.

IMHO. Wow, "oil causing leaks" hmm, I think if it leaks it's cause you have a seal problem not an oil problem, maybe the detergents in the synthetic is removing the varnish left by the old oils, I am no chemist but thats a theory.
As for another claim of "swelling seals" this is really got me concerned. Seals are supposed to be unaffected by oils, if they are swelling then the oil must be permeating the seal material, if thats the case in my mind it would be breaking down the material.
Sorry I dont buy any of this, it all sounds like the kind of marketing rubbish they spew trying to sell addatives. pure snake oil.
If Porsche recommends an oil like Mobil 1 then I doubt it shrunk the seals when they tested it LOL!
Imagine the recall! having to rebuild all those engines, it would bankrupt them.
I also have a theory about mechanics. In fear of looking stupid, when asked a technical question they don't know the answer to, they make something up, don't expect a mechanic to be an oil guru, hell, some of them can't even screw my car back together correctly.

See correction on my previous post- price was actually $5.72 /qt and 68.63 per case (no price break on the case). They will ship, if any one is interested - no affiliation etc. etc.

All very interesting ... thanks to everyone who has participated in on the topic.
A little clarification on the valve noise ... yes the entire valve train was louder with Mobil 1 and it didn't matter cold / hot / start-up or not.
The #3 noise was "loud" more like a collapsed lifter sound. (click / snick) ... put in the Red Line 50 wt. and quiet. Hey ... I don't understand it just reporting my observations.
My engine is pretty tight ... race only ... so I am more suspect of the oil than the engine/seals/maintenance although I can't rule out anything.
The Redline has been back in my engine for three days now and not a leak ... hum ....?????
Some of my buddies and teamates (951 race cars) use Mobil 1 and they're always adding oil throughout the race weekend. Red Line claims 25-50% less evaporation than other synthetics and I believe I can confirm this in my limited sample. This is probably more significant in a turbo car because of the increased heat. We all also run pretty high boost levels (more heat and blow by?)
As for the comment(s) about "marketing rubbish" I tended to think that too ... now I'm not so sure ??? As far as Porsche using Mobil 1 from the factory I'm sure there is more to that decision than meets the eye ($$$) ... speaking of marketing rubbish!!
I'm sure Mobil 1 is a fine product, it just won't find it's way into my car again. IMHO Red Line is superior.
RE: Redline: I pay 6.95 a qt. when I buy a case or 7.95 per individual qt. (Race Central, Portland OR - I think they ship free)I'm looking into buying it in 1 & 5 gallon containers.
NOTE: The 50 wt. race oil meets the SAE 15w50 specs ... it just doesn't have detergents that the street oils have. Red Line products use "polyol ester" base stocks.

I'm not sure about much of this, EXCEPT, Mobil 1 definately leaked worse than normal oil in MY car. I use the 15w-50, and buy it by the 5QT container for a hair under $18ea. At a hair over $4/QT, Redline sounded like QUITE a deal- oh well, maybe I'll try the place in Winston Salem- that's not too far, so maybe S&H won't KILL me! Do you have a a # for Race Central, belz? Anyone know of a plce that sells Redline for cheaper? I don't care if it's by the case or in larger multi-QT containers- I'd want to stock up a little anyway. If I do end up w/some, I'll definately report back on how it compares to the Mobil in my car...
thanks,
Robby
