924 VS 944
#2
I and most people here prefer the 944, particularly the turbo versions designated 951 and 952
The 924 was the first in the production series.
It was modestly powered by an Audi 4.
If your lucky you can find someone that will give you a 924 for free...might need work....but you get the point.
The 924S is the last of the 924 series. [edit]
IT shares all the same components with the 944...most notably the drive train.
The 924 lacks the 944s wider body.
The 924 turbo is an Audi Turbo, and not comparable to the 951.
The 944 can be broken into 2 groups based on the inerior update mid 1985 model year.
83-85 and 85.5 and up
Most notable difference is the new dash.
The ultimate model in the series would be the 951, 952 and the 968.
Are you a perspective buyer?

All mechanical things are problematic.
I try to stay one step ahead of my maintenance and do ALL of it myself...plus for others as well.
My Porsches have all treated me very very well. I have friends with new cars that have more problems and cost the same as my used porsche.
Difference being, I dont have a 300-600$ monthly payment.
May I ask what you are looking to do and/or, why you ask?

Off the top of my head:
924 problems:
924 has a plastic elbow in the head that diverts oil flow. It likes to break and starve the head of oil. This leads to warn cam-lobs, bum followers, and a $1,000-1,500 repair bill.
The old semi-mechanical fuel injection can be a pain.
Less HP.
4 wheel disc brakes were only an option.
924 advantages:
Easier to change clutch (some years).
Cheaper parts.
Non-interfearance engine design. (don't have to worry about the timing belt).
Lower purchase price.

952 was the right hand drive turbo for Australia and England I think, alot of people belive that the 944 turbo S is a 952 but that is not true, the engine is coded M44/52 for the S and M44/51 for the non S and that is why some people call it a 9(52), anyway the 88 S's and 89's are not 952's.

This will require some looking into.
