Ok, I took off the air/oil separator and it looks to be the culprit.

It's melted! The pic isn't great, but the upper side hole (the one that goes into the head) is very deformed at the lip.

Anyone have a decent one of these for sale?

Thumbs up

Good point...

Everything seems normal these days with that area of the engine...but yikes...who knows what this poor car has been through. Any ideas right off the bat with what could have caused such heat? I'd hate to fry another one! I'm thinking this happened a long time ago--had the car about two years, and it's always reeked of oily fumes. Hopefully replacing this item will stop that problem.

I can just imagine some PO with a blowtorch in the engine compartment, going all mad-scientist on the car...ugh...
