Post What's a 924S worth??

Hey Guys,

I was out the other day an found a private owner who is selling a 1987 924S. I must have it bad, cause my 1st thought was, wow a nice beater so that the 944S can stay home and be driven on special occasions.

I was wondering what these cars are worth? This one is rough looking. The white paint is faded, the phone dials are corroded (not real bad though), it has some small rusty spots and the interior is ragedy (cloth seats). The tires look ok, and it runs good. It was maintained mostly by the same independent Porsche mech, that I go to for the complicated stuff, so, I expect that it is fairly sound mechanically. The owner is a 20 something young lady who works at a Penzoil quick change shop and it has about 115K on the clock. It was her daily driver until last December when she bought a newer car. She wants $2950. I expect that it would take belts rollers, water pump, seals and a tune-up to cover the main mechanical issues, say $1200, (I am assuming that the belts are due). Add a paint job and powder coat the phone dials and it would even look good, another $700.

So for approximately $5,000, I could get a nice second p-car. I need this like a hole in the head, but what is a 924S worth? and how do I verify that it really is an "S"

Others can likely comment more accurately on the price, but it sounds about $500-$1000 too high to me for a car in that condition.

My main comment is to be _very_ cautious of the "small rusty spots" since the body is galvanized... it's either taken a hit & been repaired poorly, or has been in a pretty corrosive atmosphere (like heavy acid rain) for quite a while.

I'm knocking this particular car, based on your comments. In general, I think the 924S is probably the best purchase bargain in the family... a 944 chassis & drivetrain at near-924 prices. Problem is that it costs as much to fix as a 944.

I'd want a _good_ PPI from an un-involved or totally trustworthy tech. Your projected budget isn't allowing anything for struts, brakes, clutch, motor mounts, etc... all the stuff that can need doing now or soon. Without DIY repair, you could quickly have a $7500 ruster...

Jim, who probably just got up on the wrong side of the bed this AM... I'm not sure there was a "right" side....

Tat does sound to high for me, i have been in the market for one for a while and one in that cond. i'd say no more than $2400, and that is still probably streching it. There was a 924S on ebay where the t-belt let go the rest of the car was magnificent and it went for 1200 i think.

I would say for the condition that you describe of this vehicle it is not a worthwile purchase. It will be a huge money pit. I have an 87 924S (all 924's made 86,87 and 88 are "S") that is almost perfect and has had all of the recent major service. I would expect that my car with a very nice interior (few dash cracks), 67k miles, and reasonably nice paint would not bring more than 4-5k. Also, if this car is an auto. DON'T BUT IT!
