Default With whom do you insure your upgraded/restored '8# 944?

Almost finished my street/track '86 951. Geico only valuing it via book at $8,500. Going to be worth at least double that. Any recommendations for a place that will ensure an upgraded car?

Haggerty will do agreed value if you have a different daily driver and restrict the mileage.

My insurance company allows me to get an evaluation on the cost of the car, I have not done it yet for my current 944 but when they did my 951 they asked if there was anything that would increase the value.

Just be careful and ask questions and get it in writing in your policy. Insurance companies will accept a valuation or value figure when you insure and they will base your premiums on that figure but the value after a loss is still based on book. Its only an agreed value policy if it says that is the value you will get paid for a loss. Haggertys specifically States that.

Some of the specialty insurers will insure a modified car. You pay a higher rate for that type of agreed value policy. There may be alarm bells going off depending on the level of visible modifications. Things like a roll bar or cage may exclude you from that type of policy.

USAA, and make sure you have towing coverage

It's about $40 a month for a 20 year old guy, only car in my name.

You may have a problem if they find out you track it. Be wary of that, some may not want to insure you.

If mine was a daily driver, absolutely -- they have our daily drivers...

For "modern classics", I use Parish Heacock... 252/year, stated value - no total, 2500 miles/year -- 252 bucks/year.

It is difficult to compare pricing, mainly because of who you are and where you live. In the collector market, it has been my experience that the big guns that do the most advertising are the most expensive. Hagerty has always quoted high for me. I recently did a quote on my three collector cars, a Superbird at $95,000 agreed value, the 944 at 10k and a Fiat Spider at 8k. The Hagerty quote although it had unlimited mileage was roughly double what American Modern and Classic Collectors wanted. I settled for some mileage restrictions and banked the $400 in savings.

State Farm seems to have good collector car coverage.

I have heard conflicting reports as to whether State Farm offers "stated amount" or "agreed value". And that is a big difference. Agreed value is the only verbage that GUARANTEES you will receive that amount in the case of a total loss.

Yes, the rates are attractive. The issue is "what happens when you have a claim?" The mainstream insurers typically are just not set up to handle the nuances of a collector car claim. I see it as rolling the dice.
