How well do the conversion kits work? I just bit the bullet and refilled with R12 ($215, IIRC) because all the A/C guys I talked to said that the conversions don't ever blow quite as cold.

Adrial,
I am almost positive that the stock R-12 amount is 33 oz. It should say what the capacity is inside your hood on the left side just aft of the A/C dryer. There should be a sticker on the fender well. So, 80-85% of 33oz is 26.4-28.05oz.
That sounds about right but I would defer to Bob S. He is an A/C tech and basically the "man" when it comes to A/C. So go with what he tells you.
Regards,
Max

You can convert quite easily. You need to:
1. Take your compressor out.
2. Drain your compressor of old oil.
3. Install new oil
4. Replace drier with correct R134a unit
5. reinstall compressor
6. Have SHOP vaccum down your system
7. Have SHOP fill with R134a, buying 12oz cans at G.I. Joes will not allow you to measure accurately.

Don't waste your time with that R134A stuff. Use the R-951. It will make your car much faster, unless you already drive a 951. Don't use the R-928, it is too heavy, and for Heaven's sake don't use the R-911 unless you want to have engine cooling problems.

I converted my 1983 944 with 24 oz of R-134A and just dumped in the oil conversion. No expansion valve change, no oil purge. It blows as cold as the R-12 did and is still going strong. I would have drained the system, but my compressor leaks anyway.
