Post '92 vs '94 968

Can anyone tell me whether Porsche made any significant changes/improvements to the 968 coupe from the '92 model year to the '94 models?

I know of two coupes that are for sale, a 1992 968 with 21,000 miles asking $16,000, and a '94 968 with approx 30,000 miles asking $25,000, both cars are in beautiful condition. I intend to keep my '87 Carrera (3.6L engine) and make the 968 my daily driver with occasional D.E. comes next Spring.

While it would appear to be a "no brainer",($16,000 vs. $25,000), I am wondering whether there are any important reasons to avoid the '92 968 that would justify spending another $9,000 for the newer car??

Thanks.

Richard

There were small things, but nothing major. The largest thing that I can think of is that '92 was the only year that the 968 was offered with a Clutch Plate style LSD or a Torsen LSD. All the other years, it was only offered with the Torsen.

Cosmetic only. Some under hood storage areas and I believe the rear seats changed. Check out www.968.net. Their info is significant. They have an incredible price survey that was collected recently. The price survey addresses your very issue of milage vs age.

Good Luck!

The '92 sounds like an incredible deal - it probably will sell very soon.

There was a transmission problem with the 968's - the pinion gear I think (somebody please correct me) - you might want to see if the upgrade has been performed on either of the cars.

I'd definitely go for the 92! If you look under the hood on both cars, you'll be pleased by the cleaner 92 engine compartment, as there are 3 large black plastic covers that really update the look of the earlier models...the later models did not have these, or if they did it was rare. Be certain to check if the gearbox has experienced the pinion bearing problem with either car...if it hasn't been repaired [perhaps it has not broken yet] I'd be cautious. The 94 was offered with optional 993 seats, but the 92 interior is just as suitable. You'll be more than happy saving 9 thousand bucks! -Trevor

As the cars didn't sell well when new Porsche spent almost nothing in upgrades during the life of the car. Do check if the cam and balance belts have been changed; even though the recommended service is 45K, many of us use 30K to be safe. BUT, they do deteriorate with age, so even the lo mile 92 should or will need them-now. My 94 had 30K when I bought it two years ago, and the balance shaft frayed within a month of purchase. No damage, but if it was the cam belt it's really bad news.

Thank you all for your help. I will let you know whether I become a two-porsche owner (one air-cooled & one water-cooled) in the near future.

Schneider: I enjoyed that 968 dedicated web-site.

Hopefully, I'll be back here with happy news.

Good night.

Richard
