Post Paragon v. Lindsay Racing Big Brake Kits

I guess this will get answered by Jason or Skip. I noticed that Lindsay Racing offers (what appears to be) the same BBK as Paragon. However, Paragon's is $200+ cheaper and it includes pads. Lindsay's does include the Purple Anodized rotor hat. I really don't know what purpose it serves other than decoration. Any ideas? Regardless, I can't imagine it being worth the extra cash. Does anyone have any experience with either setup? It will be at least a year before I convert to a BBK but I was just curious. Catolog/website dreaming again.

Regards,
Max

You don't know what the hat is for? You got a lot of studing to do on the subject. The hatted rotor is quite a bit different than a fully cast rotor. Object is reduced unsprung rotating weight.

Your next lesson is on floating rotors.

Be very careful on your BBK. you DO NOT NEED HATS if you have 87 or later. Most BBK are shipped with the 993T rotors
993 351 045 10
993 351 046 10
and they supply a hat to replace the one that comes on the disk. They get 200-300 for the hats. On a late 944t and S you can use the 964T (965) rotors and save the money on the hats.
965 351 045 00
965 351 046 00

All parts to build your own kit for a 87-89 turbo or equivalent N/A

1 x 993 351 425 10 caliper
1 x 993 351 426 10 caliper
1 x 965 351 045 00 rotor
1 x 965 351 046 00 rotor
4 x 70 mm caliper bolts
1 x troutman stainless steel brake line set (993T not 944T)
2 x caliper adapter brackets
1 x pads of your choice (993T not 944T)
4 x 965 351 096 00 pad dampeners
4 x 964 351 096 01 pad dampeners

Kokeln has the bolts, brackets can be found at virtually every mail order place on the planet. This kit can be built for about 1100-1400 if you shop the magazines on the individual parts.

FYI the purple hats you talked about are the old style Kokeln hats, they are not hard anodized, I have a set and they scratch easy. No hats needed with this set up.

Early cars need the hub machined down, and will require hats, the 965 rotor trick will not work on those cars.

Good luck

fletch: Do you need caliper adapters if you have an M030 car?

I thought you didn't need them.

Yep, you need adapters for an M030 car. The M030 cars still used the same caliper as the standard turbo (as far as I know). The bolt pattern needs to be wider, thus the need for the adapter.

The M030 cars will not need an adapter as they already accept a radial mounted caliper. The non M030 cars do need the adapter because they utilize axial mounted calipers.

Good to know Jason, but what is a radial mount?

All the cars I have seen have the same bolt pattern for the calipers, I have not worked on a car with factory M030 components, and I did not know they used different calipers. Did they use the early 928 4 piston caliper?. and do you know the azle carrier number? I would upgrade to that if I can eliminate the caliper adapter I currently have to use.

thanks
