Default S2 timing belt gear cover/distributor cap housing PN 944-105-179-10

Hi folks,

I'm much more regular over in the 951 section... helping a friend of mine track down a part on a new-to-him 1990 S2.

He's got the car (which he only bought a few weeks ago) sitting at a local shop, they told him it needs a new timing belt cover, and that they cost $700. Originally I thought he just needed the basic black plastic timing belt covers... but it turns out that what he *actually* needs is the rear half of the aluminum timing belt gear housing (the part that mounts to the cam tower, behind the cam gear).

When I look in the PET, I see 944-105-179-08 and no separate call-out for the M44.41, which would lead me to believe that they're all the same. Pelican also says this part fits 944/S/S2 and 968 (and is NLA).

However, the shop told him that the correct part number is 944-105-179-10. That number does not show up in the PET at all. Pelican lists it, but no picture. Impex says it's NLA, but lists the retail price at $680 (ouch).

Is it safe to assume that the -10 part is just a superceded part number?

Planning to get the part from Lart to save my friend a few bucks - just want to make sure I tell him the right piece!

Nevermind - figured it out through the help of the AutoAtlanta website.

Looks like the -08 part was superceded to a -09, and the -09 supercedes to a -10.

I think the difference in the rear covers for the 16 valve cars is the mount for the hall sensor for the cam. Honestly not sure if the earlier cars have it. Front is completely different due to the distributor cap.

How did it get damaged anyway? Just seems like an odd part to break.

I don't know how it broke, as I understand it, the car was somewhat neglected by the previous owner and he took possession of the car with this damage. Apparently some of the little alignment nubs are broken off, as well as some of the holes stripped.

They are magnesium and can corrode away. 944 online sells repaired ones.

They break all the time.

Any 16v cover can be used.

I am using a 968 rear cover and a 'S' front cover on my S2

Good to know, never thought of it as a part that would ever have issues.
