Engine 'ticking' sound
I have a ticking sound eminating from the engine (rev related) particularly in the 1.5 to 3K range
Its not the injectors, and I suspect a cam follower as the sound is very similiar to the noise tappets make.
Is it possible to check any gap tolerances between the cams and followers by removing the cam cover, and if so are these easily replaced.
Thoughts welcome
Thanks

The lifters are hydralic, so adjustment is not possible. First level of attack would be trying something like Swepco 502 to see if you can unstick that lifter. If that fails your going to be replacing the lifters.
I have seen some other people mention exhaust leaks making a ticking noise as well, so be sure to eliminate that before replacement of the lifters. At 38.23 list price, even if you can find them for half your in for one hell of a parts bill.

My 87 na944 made that exact same metallic ticking rev related sound for about 10 days. I was told to check lifters, but ended up being an exaust leak. The stud actually broke off in the head, which I was told by the dealer is a common problem in these cars. This occurs because of the heat
buildup, and age of these cars. When you start driving them hard these things happen. I would have all of the gaskets and studs inspected at the manifold. I paid 500 to get mine fixed after it broke. They said it could have even been 1000 if the easy out tool did not work. Then you have to take the head apart...... a big job!!!

I had a ticking noise that everyone told me was normal (car was driven occasionally for a year like this....1k miles maybe). It ended up being the Chain Tensioner. It had worn through the plastic on both sides (the guards were all but gone. On the top rail, the chain had actually worn into the metal of the tensioner...(I WAS LUCKY!) If your car has 100k miles or so without a tensioner replacement...it most likely needs one. (My car went 130k, and it has had mobil 1 since new).
