Post What the?? Can't get dust cap off to do wheel bearings!

So what is the trick? I've tried vise grips, a monkey wrench, punches, hammers, all of it and it won't budge. Any tips or tricks? Thanks.

I used a BIG screwdriver. Tapped it with a hammer to get under the lip to get it started, then worked it back and forth from both sides. It sits in deeper than most cars so it's tough to get started, but once it starts it's a piece of cake.

Some folks "dimple" the caps to get them to stay on during track events... your's may be this way from a PO. I have one that is dimpled, the other is safety wired.

If you still haven't gotten it, you might try some gentle heat. At last resort, you could drill a hole in the center and thread a slide hammer onto it. Kind-of ruins the dust cap concept, though you could RTV it once complete.

Good Luck!

Perry-

I had the same issue, I would try to tap a screwdriver between the cap and the hub, but it just wouldn't go. Finally I used a wood chisel. The sharp edge was able to get between the two and it was easy after that. Be careful and don't plan on carving and fine furniture...

My experience was that of JohnK944T; screwdrivers were useless, but a wood chisel did the job easily. FWIW, Haynes says to use a chisel. The only reason I didn't try it first was that I didn't have an old chisel, only nice sharp new ones. Now I have one less, but at least I can get the grease caps off easily now!

Thanks for all the tips. I wasn't too keen on the heat, but will try a larger chisel. I just don't want to tear it all up!

Perry,
Also, don't forget to heat the hubs to get the races out. If you are replacing the bearings/races. Search the archives for my previous posts about it. If you heat the hubs the races will pop out easily. Otherwise you will damage your hubs unless you have access to a hydraulic press.

Good luck,
Max
