you mean the lifters? i dont know how many people buy used lifters... you can get new vw lifters for 10 each that work for the 16v...
ive been thinking about doing some repair on the cam cover myself. what would be the best way to do that? bondo? any high temperature type stuff?

I was going to use bondo just because it was going to be a decorative piece. I wouldn't trust that to seal oil. Especially since bondo thats too thick can crack under vibration.
And not the lifters, the valves themselves. But I guess it would be out there to buy something like engine internals used if you're already going through the trouble of a rebuild...
I was just using brake cleaner and a pressure washer to strip the paint off. Got a good 75% of it. Its at the shop right now so I'll take a look at it in the morning as far as the Cams go

The cam cover bolts are worth a few bucks. Someone might pay $20 for 4 or 5 of them. Aircraft Stripper strips that coating off the cam cover well. The cams might be good cores if not good cams.
