Default 924 in-tank Fuel Pump Issue

In-tank fuel pump replacements for my 1979 924 (non-turbo) (Part No. 928 608 13 00) are a hair too thick at 36mm+ in diameter to fit in the gas tank.

I've tried 2 new pumps, both "Genuine Porsche" parts, ordered from two different reliable distributors. I had no difficulty replacing this in-tank pump about 10 yrs. ago with the same Porsche-listed part no.

The old pump and the new ones appear identical in almost all respects except for the older pump being a "hair" smaller diameter with stamped markings on the filter end with an "Argo" logo, and the numbers "B20409" and "3.0304-01" unlike the new pumps which have no markings.

The new pumps could be forced in to the hole about 3mm but there was deep scoring on the portion of zinc cylinder which was forced.

As I live in the Southern U.S. both pumps are needed for normal driving in hot weather.

Can you suggest how to locate an in-tank fuel pump equivalent for a 1979 924 non-turbo which is 36mm in diameter and not a hair over? Or suggest some other fix? Thanks for any advice.
