Post hi!

hello, i am new here.

i am a prospective owner of a NA 944. i am looking at getting a second "fun" car to drive during the summer, and this car seems to speak to me. every one i have seen in person has impressed me. (especially the bright red one in near mint shape on the way into town ...

i am wondering if there is anything you all can tell me about what esactly to look for when purchasing one of these cars. i have read that the timing belt and (?water pump?) are trouble prone areas..

purchase and maintenance costs, would be nice to know also. i do not mind having to replace a few parts here and there; one SHOULD expect that with a car of this age.

BTW, anyone in the southern NH area?

bye for now

Just hang out on the board and read for a few days, you'll learn a bunch.

These can be very reliable cars if you find one that's been taken care of. If it's been abused, walk away from it. Always get a pre-purchase inspection by somebody who knows 944's. Search on "944 FAQ" in google and you can read up on the reliability issues these cars have.

Good luck

Thaddeus is right, hang out at this forum for a few days and you will learn a bunch, I know I have! You'll also get a few laughs.

Best advice I got when I started looking for my car:

Don't buy the first one you see or drive. Check out as many as you can before writing a check. Drive some that are out of your price range too, if you have a range, just to see the difference.

Is Nashua southern enough?

Hope to see you in your 944 around town soon.

Here is a great primer on the 944 series: 944 FAQ

Peter Morgans "Original 924/944/968" is also an excellent resource for the new buyer - lots of good photographs as well as good technical infromation.

Best of luck.

First, welcome to the list. Like the guys said, there is alot to be learned here.

Timing belt and water pump design is fine....like any car with a timing belt....it must be changed. Timing belt driven water pumps can cause major problems if neglected on any car.
With any interference type motor, if the belt slips, breaks, or is installed improperly...valve damage is inevidable.

The 944 is a fantastic automobile and can be very reliable. just take the time to shop for a good one and get a PPI ( pre purchase inspection )

Good luck.

Eric where exactly are you located? I am about 45 miles north of Pittsburgh. My brother goes to school in Pitt so I go through town on occasion

Judd,

I am in Greentree and spend alot of time in the Southside and Strip districts. I also gradiated from Pitt. Do you belong to PCA? You will have to come into town for the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix in July---Porsche is the featured marque this year.

Eric 86 951 may be gone by the end of the week.

ok, gotcha! i plan on at least lurking a bit here and there for the time being.

seems like a nice place.

i am *near* the dover/tri city area in nh...

from what i read there are plenty of 944s on the market, so i can afford to be a very picky buyer.

thanks for the replies.

Eric, I am a member of PCA but my local region is the Eastern Buckeye Region so I dont find out about a lot of events in Pittsburgh. I will have to keep that event on my calander this year!
