One contributor to my Porsche passion is the fond memory I still have of Mr. Van den Buckel working on the silver 911 in his garage in the early to mid '70's. Always at night in his one car garage, single incandescent bulb under the car, his legs sticking out. I only remember him working on the car, never driving it. Middle class neighborhood, very different and special car. Never got the nerve to ask him what he was doing under that car...again. Nobody else I knew of had one. Rarely saw one. It was just like the one in Road and Track. Special. PORSCHE.

Mike

P.S. Thanks God, thanks Mr. Van den Buckel.

Ah yes...for me it all started when I was old enough to listen to and understand my dad telling everyone about the CAR he sold to buy his first house when I was born....a 356A Cabriolet in silver with black interior.....the one he says he should have buried in the back yard and dug up for me when I was 17.

This got me into cars in general and P-cars as a "lust-for" ( although the mini's and sprites and jaguars and so-on were all part of the influence).

Today I have my 944...he's got a 944 ( different color and better shape than mine) and also once again has a 356...think this one's a 1963 with a newly re-built motor, original ( good shape) interior and good straight body ( in need of paint)...needs a break job also.....

PS - It's FOR SALE if anyone's looking!

Lust on!

It was possibly the 1984 new car show in Montreal that started it all for me. My father was looking for his next new car, something with 4 doors, possibly beige, if available...) and I wandered into the Porsche display (I was only 14 at the time and was being raised in a family where a car was merely an appliance) unawares as to just what a Porsche was. A salesman was showing a 911 and happened to set down a brochure and turn his back on it. Well, that was it, I grabbed the brochure and took off back to the Ford stand where my father was. I studied that brochure day and night, admiring the sleek lines of the 911 series. Sadly, the brochure was in French only so, even though I still have it, I have never read a word of it. They say a picture is worth a thousand words so all was well. Next thing you know, my father subscribes to Car and Driver magazine, so month after month, beautiful cars start to flow into my hands... ever since, I've been a car guy.

Once I started driving in '86, it didn't take me long to find the local Porsche dealer. I went every week to check out the cars and eventually made friends with the sales manager there. One day, he handed me the keys to a 944 and told me to bring it back in one piece. I was in heaven, sitting in the sport seats, smelling the leather. I remember like it was yesterday the headlights popping up into view when I turned them on and the way that the nose dipped, then reared back up when I shifted. I decided then and there, that one day, I'd own one of these machines. Later, I was allowed to drive the owner's 924S and was similarly impressed. After high school graduation, I was offered a job at the dealer for the summer, an offer I didn't have to think twice about. I worked in parts and did a lot of gofer work but the best part was doing customer deliveries for the service dep't. I drove EVERYTHING that summer, from a 928S4 to a Lotus Esprit Turbo. That's one summer I'll never forget.

That fall, I entered college but still frequented the dealer. I was well trusted by then and was asked to represent the dealership at the new car show in Ottawa. Of course, I accepted! For a wonderful 5 days for 4 years in a row, I got to surround myself in what was then becoming my obsession. The last year I worked the show, the owner's son (also the service manager)drove me home in the all-new Carrera 4. It was winter but that car just hauled *** down the highway towards home. We must have easily kissed 240kph on the slushy road under total control. What a ride!

I have always held out for my dream 911. Over the years, I have owned many sports cars, from a 1972 Datsun 240Z, to a 1987 Dodge Shelby Charger to the 1990 Mazda Miata that I have just recently parted with. All were great cars but as you know, there is no substitute for a Porsche. Last year, I finally admitted that a 911 was still a few years away but why not look elsewhere within the Porsche ranks? I have always loved the 924/944 family since my first drive but had never thought of buying one, what with the visions of Carrera's dancing through my head. This has just changed.

Now, here it is 2002. I am finally living my dream and bringing home a 1987 924S. The car is in showroom shape, only having covered 77,000km in it's pampered life and the Guards Red paint and Parchment leather interior are flawless. Many would put down a 924S but until you've driving one, you'll never know how underrated this car really is. Faster than a N/A 944, on par with a 944S, at a fraction of the price, what's not to love?

Well, that's my story of Porsche-addiction. Oh, and in case you're wondering, my father surprised everyone by bringing home a silver 1985 Thunderbird back in '84... quite a change from the brown Chevy Malibu that he traded in!

My mom started my lust...a 911 has always been her dream car. Who would've thought I'd have a Porsche before her?

She will hopefully be getting into a Boxster, maybe an S this spring/summer.

Saw a nice fold-out add for the 944 in a magazine about 13 years ago. Pulled it out, stuck a picture of myself in the driver's seat, and put it up on the garage wall. It's still there.

Later, worked for a car nut (mostly British rusty cars) that bought a 944 for daily driver. He tossed me the keys first day he had it. I fit the car like no other. Great seats, great visibility, fun to drive, handles nice...

Finally looked up at that poster about two years ago and said "now's the time". Asked the tower for clearance (she said no), brought one home anyway... Car's still here and so is the wife, so it all worked out okay. Truth be told, she gets a kick out of how happy the car makes me.

Learned everything I know about Porsches since I started looking for mine. Grew to appreciate this fact more than anything else... These are the only cars you can drive straight out to the track, drive it like an F1 pilot, and take it to the office the next. Amazing!

Keep the shiny side up,

I remember when my lust began like it was yestersay. Actually it was in the fall of 1998. I was a freshman for my high school golf team and we were playing against our rivals. One of the kids on the other team pulled up in a near perfect 924 and I immeadiately fell in love with it. I've seen Porsches on the road and admirred them, but when I saw one close up I was blown away. So for the next three summers I worked hard by cutting grass to buy a 944 of my own. Now I'm 18 and have had it almost two years and haven't regretted a single day. Now, I can almost gaurentee that I will always have a Porsche in my driveway.

first i thought "oh darn i dont have a story" but now that i think about it i think i do.

i'de have to say it started with my matchbox cars as a kid, my dad used to buy them for me all the time. my favorite one was this weirdly painted 928. i found some pics of the same one on ebay so ill post it:

anyway. i guess this is the whole "start" of it. whenever i would see a 928/944/968 on the road i would think "one day im gonna have one of those".. and honestly i didnt know the difference between them all. actually i thought the 968 was just a newer version of the 928.. not the 944 which it actually is. what did i know?

well now i know it all.. about 8 months ago i was lookin through the porsche cars for sale on ebay and saw this beat up red 83 944 for 3 grand and thought "wow i can get a porsche for 3 grand?" and thats when the flame re-ignited into something real.

so thats it.. after months of looking and contemplating if i should take the plunge i did.. and now i have a nice 944S with a coolant leak.. but im sure itll be back to perfect in no time i cant wait!

As a kid in the 60's I always marveled at the 356 owned by a friend of my uncle's, I thought it was the neatest looking car but in my mind I thought the engine in the back put it in the same performance league as the pedestrian Renaults and Simcas popular in Europe at the time. Then I saw 906s and 908s up and close and personal, saw them race a number of times and my idea of performance and Porsche was forever changed. To this day the 906 is still my favorite Porsche. Since then I've always admired their cars and have always wanted one. Time and place did not allow me to get one till Nov. 2000 when I agonized over an 83 911 and an 87 944. The 944 won, fits my frame better, has better lines (imo), and the little kid in me can't think the engine is in the back...

Come to think of it I could have purchased a 944 sooner but I was having tons of fun with all types of VWs and Audis from basic Rabbits to 16v Sciroccos. I sold a pristine 91 Coupe quattro when I bought the 944 and one of my friends thought I was downgrading.., I have to tell you he was wrong, though the quattro was uncanny in foul weather there is no way it can compare with the feeling and immediacy of the 944. The 944 feels like an extension of my limbs, the quattro felt like an heavy albeit comfortable cruiser. I hope to keep the 944 for some time and replace it when the time comes (inevitably it will), with an S2 coupe or a 968.

Reading this thread is enough to drive me insane. I'm feeling the same way I did the day I drove the 951. Its hard to keep myself from making a bad desicision like taking out a loan to buy one of these cars. I've been working my way from debt to halfway there... If I'm lucky I could buy the car within the next few months

Nick,
If you don't mind my 2 cents: getting out of debt should be your first concern, besides you'll enjoy your car more knowing that it is in fact yours. Good luck in your pursuit !

It had to be when I was riding in the back seat of my Dads BMW 320i with shaved head, headders, and sport exhaust and my Dads college buddy and his 1972 911S when they used to play cat and mouse from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe. I still get goose bumps thinking of the sound the 911 made when it lightly tagged the rev limiter just next to the rear hinge out window of the 320i! Lots of good racing though since my Dad was a real maniac (kind of like me) behind the wheel. Anyway after that I knew my fist car would be a Porsche or a BMW.....you all know which one it was
