My handbrake has to be brought up to the very last click before it will hold the car securely. Where should I look to see whats wrong?

I think brake ajustlent is dona at the wheels
Personally I favour parking the car in first gear
At wet weather the brake linings tend to get stuck to the drums (common for all parking brakes), snapping off with a "bang" when you start moving the car.

I park the car in 2nd gear and use the parking brake as well. I dunno why I use 2nd instead of 1st...Just a habit I guess.
I've never heard the parking brake snapping off with a "bang"...

I like the location of the brake simply because it is easier to reach to stop the car when pushing it - i.e. in a garage situation where cars are rearranged in and out of the shop...

Black951,
In order to adjust your parking brakes you will have to jack up the rear of the car and remove the rear wheels. You will see an adjustment hole in the face of the rotor hub. You will need to position it at approximately 10 or 2 o'clock depending on which side the car you are on. Using a large screw driver you can adjust the star shaped wheel (just like on old drum brakes...'cause that's what our e-brakes are) to put tension on the shoes. Once you have them adjusted so that you can barely move the rotor, back it off a couple of clicks. Do this on both sides and then go inside the car and pull the carpet up some near the e-brake and adjust the cable tension. If your shoes are in good shap you will be able to adjust the cable so that two clicks will do it for you. In the Haynes manual it says to remove the drivers seat to adjust the cable, but I don't know anybody who actually does that. Just push the seat all the way forward and fold the seat back forward and that should give you enough room to do the job.
Regards,
Max

FYI, on a Boxster, the ignition is on the left of the column, the handbrake is in the center console. Also, my '86 944 has an identical indention on the passenger side rocker moulding where the handbrake would go on a RHD car...

I put my car in first if it's facing downhill or reverse if it's facing uphill. That way the engine won't turn over the wrong way if it moves. Probably just superstition...

Netherlands is (nominal) flat so I dont worry about up / downhill.
I park in 1th gear only because when hit, the compression of the engine will absorb the energy ISO the car's bodywork.
The Porsche is parked in the garage with stopper blocks on a rear wheel.
This prevent problems with the brakes in the wet weather we have.
