Post Noise From Head - Lifters?

I have heard this noise since I got the car a few months ago and I do not think it has gotten worse or is causing any problems, but it is annoying.

When I rev the engine up to any speed and then let go I can hear these little metallic sounds come to a stop. They almost sound like a wind up toy stopping. It seems like it is coming from the head and seems like the noise lifters would make if they were clanging around, but that is just an educated guess. I have no experience with this problem.

Any other possibilities? If no one can imagine the noise I am trying to describe I could take a recorder out there and record it. If it is the lifters what can I expect in the future?

Lifters may be dirty. Don't quote me on that but that happened to my 924S and I was told do drop a little ATF Dextron 3 in the oil, for a few days, then completely change the oil.

It worked and my car never had that noise again. (Back when I had the 924S).

I just changed the oil with Mobile One Tri-synthetic 15w-50 and the car sounds incredibly better. I had not changed the oil since I purchased the car two months/6,000 miles ago and I do not know when the owner last changed it. I know, I should have changed it when I first got it.

Anyway, I have not taken the car out yet but the liften noise seems to have disappeared with the limited testing I did in the garage. Will post an update after I go for a drive.

I bet you that it didn't have ENOUGH oil. That could do it too.

How much came out?

I check my oil routinely and never let it get more than one quart low. At one quart low the oil light comes on anyway which pretty much forces you to put more in.

Five quarts came out into the jug and about two quarts came out onto the floor. :/

I put seven quarts back in. The stick says it is just slightly more than full.

I went out driving and the lifter noise I described last night is gone. I guess they were dirty as someone suggested. The tri-synthetic Mobile One must have really cleaned them up quick.

You are lucky. If they get too badly gummed up you have to take them out and clean them.
