Red face Fault codes... again

Well, I've tried several times now with no success to get the car ('88 944S) to burp out the fault codes through the check engine light. Turn to On, floor the gas for ~5 sec, the light should start flashing, right?

BTW, I found the fault codes at www.batauto.com

Thanks

Dave

Dave, FWIW, you're following the procedure as I recall it from the one time I had a 'check engine' light on my 968. Key to 'on,' hold down the throttle, wait for the light to flash, then count flashes.

One possibility, and I admit first that I'm not familiar with the 'S' model. On my '88 944 na, the 'throttle closed' side of the TPS failed. It was a simple arrangement of two switches, sharing a common ground. One for idle, one for wide-open throttle. I'm wondering if the 'S' has a similar TPS switch, and maybe the WOT side has failed??? The brain wouldn't be getting the "flash codes" message then.

Jim, otherwise stumped....

Question

Does anyone know where this method of retrieving the fault codes is documented (as in a manual or vendor web site), and which models it applies to ?? --Roy--

I don't think the "!" counts as a check engine light. I think they are in reffernce to models that have a light that says "check engine". I know that my '87 NA does not have a "check engine" light.

Tabor, right. The 968 has a separate "Check Engine" light in addition to the master caution "!" light. I don't know which other models have it. On cars without it, I don't think there's a code storage & readout system. This may be an issue for you to look at in your 968 engine transplant.

Roy, IIRC, I found the procedure & codes in the 944 factory manual that covers the 16V engines. It would only apply to models with a "Check Engine" light, but I don't know which or when they start. My '88 na didn't; I'm assuming from Dave's question that the '88 S did.

Jim, almost too tired to type...

Right, my 944S has an actual "Check Engine" light. There's a serial number cut-off, everything prior doesn't have an actual check engine.

I thought I checked out the TPS, but maybe I should take another look.

Thanks, I'll keep you posted...

Dave
