resetting DME
I'm trying to solve a rough/wandering idle problem in my '92 968 and want to
reset the DME memory to see if it helps any. How long do I need to leave
the battery disconnected for the DME to reset? I've read anywhere from 15
min. to 24 hrs. Is there a capacitor in the DME that stores energy, why 24
hrs.? I would be nice if <12 hrs. would do it so I could just leave it off
overnight.
Thanks

Remove the positive battery cable from the battery. Touch the loose cable to the negative terminal of the battery, hold it there for 30 seconds. Reinstall the cable to the positive post and the DME is reset.

Just a little tidbit of information...
After resetting the DME the car will run like crap for a few days (or so I've been told), so don't be alarmed if it runs worse after the reset than before. If resetting the DME doesn't solve your problem it might be time to test the Throttle Position Switch (TPS). Email me if you need instructions regarding this, I've got them all. My email address is in my rennlist profile thing. It could be your idle stabilizer too...(bad...it's under the intake manifold), but I'm leaning towards the TPS. Try tapping the idle stabilizer with a screw driver or something...if it idles fine after...then you know that's the problem...if not, I wouldn't totally eliminate it.
I'm no genious though...just seems that most idle problems are related to the TPS or idle stabilizer.

Thanks. I'll give it try and see what happens.
I've already checked the TPS and it seems to be OK. The TPS on a 968 apparently works differently than the 944. I initally thought the TPS was bad since it was not clicking, but the 968 TPS appears to have a variable resistance, not an on/off situation like the 944 TPS. Maybe something to do with a signal to the VarioCam.
What does tapping the idle stabilizer do to it? And does the 968 have the same setup as the 944?
Gotta buy the 968 factory shop manuals...
I'm thinking it might be my O2 sensor, but just want to reset the DME first since its easy and free.

It it is anythink like a Honda, it will run kinda crappy until you run it real hard. And soft. And medium. If you do that for a while the computer should be able to figure out what the car is doing. It just needs to gather a bunch of data and analize it, since every engine is different.

Tapping the idle stablizer just unsticks it if it's sticking. No rocket science. I don't think it's the idle stabilizer but it's worth a shot. I have no idea if the 944 has the same setup as the 968.
Have you checked out www.968.net ? It's a awesome 968 web page...and it includes a very good discussion group that has way more 968 traffic than there is here on the Rennlist.
