Question I'm looking to buy a 944, found one far away...

In Vienna, VA. It's an 88 with 59,000 miles, they're asking $6900 (It's at a dealership). I wouldn't offer more than 6200 or maybe 6400 (unless anyone thinks it's worth less than that?). I want to get it checked it out before I go all the way down there, does anybody know any shops in that area that know 944s? Thanks.

Call Redline Motors at 540-338-1986 - Tom Stewart knows 944s like nobody's business. I'm assuming the car is at HBL? They're OK, although I'm not sure they have any really good guys back in the shop right now.

does it need any bodywork? how's the interior? service records?

for a PPI you could look up Porsche Pit-Stop or of course, Autothority to do it for you.

their numbers should be in the (703) 411 directory.

good luck!

FYI: I bought my 88 with 57K miles on it and have spent $$$ in the last year replacing things here and there, like:

cap & rotor
wires
plugs
belts, rotors, seals
water pump
all hoses
fluids
rear engine seal
auto flex plate
fuel regulator and dampner
idle control valve
CV joints

Do get it inspected before committing yourself. And don't buy it just because ou drove all the way down and looked at it, and feel obligated since you have come this far.

Somebody reccomended a shop to me I'm going to have look at it first. Did you buy yours from a private owner? Did you not have it inspected first? That sounds like loads of work for a car with such low mileage, thanks for the warning!

It isn't the mileage that gets you. My car has had perfect maintence from 85 til now, and things still have to be replaced. You can plan on doing most of that stuff that Tom mentioned about every 45-60k. It isn't a maintence free car like most are today. Though it isn't hard to work on as long as you don't abuse it.

I don't know about that other stuff but can't you put on a water pump from a newer porsche that won't wear out every 45-60k? Is there anyway to convert a 944 to electronic ignition as opposed to a rotor and all that crap? Incase you can't tell by my questions I'm not terribly mechanically inclined...
