What are the symptoms of a ruined or malfunctioning wastegate? Does anyone know? Has anyone tried an aftermarket wastegate? Or rebuilt an old one?

My wastegate failed on my car due to lack of use. The car was in storeage for 3yrs. Symptom: When Accelerating the under boost the car would suddenly shut down. Usually 2nd gear @ 3000 rpm and the same in 3rd. The shut down was triggered by the over boost switch, which means the boost was reaching close to 20psi. I had to rebuild the head so I did the waste gate as well.
Wastegate was a breeze. Since the wastegate has to be remove with the exhaust components and manifold, it was easy to take it apart. Be care full because the spring inside is under load. I found out that the diaphragm had deteriorated from lack of use. I had a hard time finding a new one and was short of time, so I fixed mine by using a tire patch kit ( for inner tubes). It has been working fine now for the last 5000 miles. I also installed a 1 bar spring while rebuilding the unit.
Hope this helps. Manuel

I've got a boost gauge installed in the car so I can see when my boost, at 3000 rpm, is way too high and I let off the gas. It means I don't get to drive and have any fun. ![Frown](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
I'm glad to see yours was sticking at around 3000 rpm as well. So it stuck in the closed position. Mine sticks in both closed and open position, so sometimes I get no boost at all.
I have an old wastegate that needs spot welds for four (4) small holes appearing in the heat sinc. So after they weld it we'll see what happens. I imagine I'll be pulling components from one wastegate onto another.

To be truthful Lars I'm not exactly sure the nature of the problem. I am only guessing the wastegate as the source of the problem. I'm posting mostly to discover if the symptom set is the same or different. Diagnosis is the hardest of all sometimes.
