Default Crusty #1 plug. Pictures!

Hey guys.
I took out my plugs today to do some TDC finding. The #1 cylinder looked kind of we inside (looking through the plug hole). I stuck a pipe cleaner in there and it came back dirty but dry.

Here are the pics of my plugs. Blow me away with knowledge!

#2 looks real lean, #1 is gunked up with stuff I've never seen before. Has the motor been idling ok? In your place, I'd first put a set of new plugs in (cheap) and see if it reoccurs. Also take a look at the distributor cap and check the plug wires for resistance. They all should match. If the one for the #1 cylinder is comparatively high, then you need new wires. It could also be that either the plug wire for that cylinder wasn't plugged in all the way and seated on that plug. Could also be corroded connector in the wire. While the plugs are out, I'd also recommend a compression check. If there's a problem with a valve or defective head gasket (that could also foul the plug) you need to know while you're in there.

+1^^^^^
Also, could #1 result from severe detonation?

Hmm... all my ignition stuff is probably the oldest parts in the engine bay.
I was thinking about buying a tune up kit (plugs, wires, cap rotor blah blah)

I think I'll do that.
I'll check the wires too before i replace em.

^^^ Yes . Good idea. But so was the one about checking that while they are out or while you are there.

Oh, they're already back in.
My balance shafts were out 180 deg. And I had to put it back together to appreciate how much better it was.
