Post BALANCE SHAFT COVER SEALS

Has anyone replaced their balance shaft cover seals? I'm referring to the rectangular cover plates (not the o-ring seals at the end of the shaft).

The bottom one (exhaust side) looks like it's pretty well buried in the engine compartment. First inspection suggests that the engine crossmember has to be removed (with engine supported from above) to remove the shaft cover.

The top one would require removal of the intake manifold.

Once the covers are off, is it just a matter of putting on a new seal and retorquing the bolts?

Thanks for any input.

I resealed my upper b/s but haven't done the lower yet. You seal the cover-to-block assembly with Loctite 574 sealant. There are seals & o-rings in the front and back too. You also need a special wrench to hold the belt sprocket to remove the nut on the front. I think if you just removed the pass. side engine mount & pwr steering pump, you could reseal the lower and keep the cross member intact, but I'm not 100% on this since I've never tried it. FWIW, I couldn't find loctite 574 locally so I used 3M Permatex red high temp sealant. It's been 5K miles and it hasn't leaked a drop. The factory manual indicates 574 is to be used though. The upper & lower use different size seals on the front too.

Are you sure that the covers need to be resealed ? Usually, the leaks are at the front of the b-shafts.
