Doing 5th gear swap. Should I use gasket sealant?
I'm swapping the transaxle in my 924S for one with a LSD from an early 944. Since I want to keep my short 5th gear, I'm doing a 5th gear swap (http://www.944spec.org/944SPEC/techn...-5th-gear-swap).
When it comes time to replace the rear cover of the transaxle, I've got a new gasket to put in there. After cleaning the mating surfaces, should I install the gasket "naked"? Or should I put a thin layer of gasket sealant on each surface? Is there any reason not to apply sealant?
Thanks,
Mark

The factory did not intend for a sealant to be used for the rear cover, just the gasket.
No need to use an additional sealant, its not a common place to weep or leak. I have never used any and have never noticed any wetness there. But it would not hurt to use a sealant in addition to the gasket.

5th gearset is accessed by only removing the rear alum cover on the back of the gear carrier.
Sealant is used on the diff cover and the gear carrier/case mating surface (shown in green). The rear cover requires a fiber/paper gasket (in blue), item 8 page 34-15 of the FSM.
