Sounds more trouble than doing the job property. If you've taken the top of the strut off the body, why didn't you just take the other (2) nuts & bolts off and remove the strut completely? It is much easier working on a bench than struggling under the car.

you fail to understand why you need an alignment when replacing your old struts for new, even when you have marked your eccentric bolt or camber plates.....two reasons. 1) I guarantee your camber will be off slightly , no matter what you think, the alignment machine does not lie; the other which is even more important is, 2) your suspension geometry will change with NEW struts installed vs OLD struts, SO An alignment is required if you care. If you don't care, everything should be fair except your tire life will decrease rapidly. ASE certified technician/factory trained,

FWIW, I replaced my front struts and this is my observations: I was unable to remove the nut on the top of the strut using an air gun with my compressor. It took it to a local shop and he used his air gun with a BIG compressor and it really spun the nut off/on. Second, I borrowed spring compressors from Autozone, as they loan tools. Third, since I removed the entire unit, including the camber adjust nut and the strut upper mount, I opted for a new alignment to save my new tires. I understand what you're trying to accomplish but not sure it will work to your satisfaction by having Larry the Cable Guy sit on your car :]

^oh really? I went out and bought an electric impact wrench yesterday it's rated at 240 ft-pounds, 2200 rpms, you don't think this will do it?

While I do agree with pulling the whole thing out, you should still use a spring compressor. Even on the bench, you can't properly/safely release the pressure. Lowering springs however may not have any pressure still on them due to the shorter length of spring.
