Exclamation Big system in 83 N/A

I bought my 83 with a fried ECU, My mechanic
noticed the previous owner had stereo cables
going into the trunk. He said that sometimes
big systems can fry the brain boxs on these cars due to the electro magnetic waves. I
have 3 10' audiobahns that push 900w each
along with 2 600w amps, 2 6x9's, and 2 6.5's
from my previous car with hope to put them
in my 944. And I was wondering if any of you
have had, or heard of this problem before?
Thanks,
Pete

Here's something to think about;
A) these cars can barely manage to put enough electricity into the headlights, to be usable after dark.
B) A big system when your car was built involved a 100x2 amp, maybe 2 of them. Subs/crossovers/multi amp systems, were pretty rare back then.
I'm not sure you'll be going through DMEs, but there may be side effects. If nothing else, I'd isolate the amps power source as much as posible. The DME is more likely to be damaged by voltage spikes then by EMF.

um.... i hope you are talking about some peak maximum power handling spec of your 10's... almost a kilowatt is quite excessive for a driver of that size. 300W would be more than plenty.

put a big fat (1 farad per kilowatt of amplifier power) capacitor right next to your amps and that will help with eliminating voltage transients.

assuming you are talking about RMS sustained power output, a back of the envelope calculation gives:
600W * 75% effeciency => amp consumes 800W
800W/14V ~= 60Amperes

so if your amp is 75% effecient in converting power supply power to speaker driving power and is supplied at 14 volts you will need 60 more amps from you alternator when that thing is cranked up. I'm not sure what our alternators are rated for but you might want to do some math before you decide that you need 3kw for some 10 inch subs.

oh yeah, and no good amp should put out anywhere near the EMF of, say, your ignition system, although without a cap it could put all kinds of transients on your 12 volt system which could potentially trash a lot of stuff, not the least of which is your ecu.

i think this will work. i have 2 audiobahn alum 10x (800 watt rms each), powered by a 1400 watt sony amp, 2 3.5" infinity in the dash, 2 5.5" infinity in the back seat area, and a pair of 5.25" audiobahn component set (i am giving them 100 watt rms). the ony problem i have is that when my car is idling ,the rpm will drop about 200 when i have my subs playing. also i had cut my door panels to fit the component set.

i put my subs in a custom box that fits in wy spare tire well. i lost no storage space and got two ausome subs(i lost my spare tire but i got a can of fix a flat instead)

you might have trouble fitting the 6x9 in your car.

i will post pics of my system soon

Don't the headlights dim due to wear and corrosion of the wiring? Isn't that why it is recommended to upgrade the wiring if using higher output bulbs? I thought that corroded wires increase resistance, which heats up and melts the wiring and grounds out, resulting in a blown fuse or even a car fire.
