Starting up a new project... Headlight mod
#16
Someone did a headlight mod where they bought some ebay HIDs and glued them into a cheap throwaway pair of ebay xenon housings.
Looked pretty good, especially for not much over $200
However if I mod my own lights at all it will be for a fixed set like on the cgt

Just curious, how many people think this looks dumb and how many think it looks good? Haha

I have thought about doing a DIY fixed GT light set up, but part of me loves the retro lights popping up thing. I have seen kids actually stop and point to my car when they see the lights come up. You just dont see many on the streets that still have that. Also have thought about a halo ring style round light, upgrade the look a little while still having the pop ups.
I'll be watching. Its always fun when Butters tries new things. You have to admit and give the kid credit, he is not scared to try anything that his brain comes up with.

1. popup lamps gone.
2. fiberglass molded casing..... hand made/sculpted by YOU.... visit a car stereo store and watch them do a custom sub.... you'll learn a lot, and by the time you're done, you could it in your sleep....
3. aftermarket HID lamps for the win. no brainer... clean/5000~6000 k/functional, etc.

I'm old skool and stuck in 80's, but I like the popup headlights. I don't mind the rectangular lights photoshopped into your pic. (I had plenty of 300zxt's). It is a neat kind of project, though I question the need to fix something that "ain't broke" I usually waited for something to need repair before I went ahead and beyond simply repairing/replacing a stock part. There must be a 100 other projects for the car even though they may seem less fun/cool.
Goodluck just the same. I'll be keeping an eye out on this thread.

Yep there are always hundreds of more important projects. My lights are God awful and rather than just upgrading my wiring I thought I might as well put a few extra hours into making something cool out of it. It's really not all that time consuming/difficult of a project

Meh, i dont like the flush look. Maybe I'll delete the motor and bar altogether and just manually move them up/down. That would be MUCH easier to engineer a setup where they lock at the correct half-up point than remaking the bar geometry altogether.. hmm.

The deeper I get, the less confident I get, and the more I'm realizing how much I like the stock circle headlight look.
Might be going down the HID retrofit route as done by kbull and LS1Porch. The good news is, whatever I decide to do, I'm only out 30 bucks for the s10 light housings. The bulbs can still be returned, and I'm gonna want the wiring upgrade anyway, so now I just gotta decide what to do.
One question: where can I find good HID projectors like the FX-R 3.0 for cheaper than $120? Any way I could take some off a used car?

I bought a low profile projector kit for my miata years ago that made the car look a little less ghey. They had nice light output. Here's some examples.
