I think I might have stumbled upon a skinny wrench that could be used in place of special tool 9244 when changing belts. When I did the belts a few months back I had to use a crecent wrench to hold the eccentric bolt on the idler rollers while I torqued down the hex head bolts. I needed special tool 9244...
But the other day I was at a bicycle store and I saw thin wrenches available in various metric sizes. Now I didn't actually buy one so I don't know if they will work. And you'll still need special tool 9201, or the krikit or somthing.
One last thing if anyone is doing belts for the first time I posted a diagram on the web that might be helpful...let me know. I am also going to try and compare settings on the 9201 and compare them to the krikit but this will be a few months...
Whats so friggin special about tool #9244 anyway?

Thanks for the diagram. Is an 87 the same? Do you need the tensioning tool on an 87? Some of the discussions lead me to think so, however the consequences of failure make me wonder.

There is nothing special about tool #9244. In fact there is another wrench that I have used in it's place. Seems that router's have the same size chuck as the what you'll need. The wrench to tighten the chuck (27mm I think)is what I use.

AST2000,
87 and onward models have the automatic belt tensioner for the camshaft belt. It puts a spring loaded tensioning gear just below the water pump pulley. I will have to put a label on my drawing to explain this because my drawing doesn't include it. I have heard some people say that they check the tension with the 9201 even on models equiped with the self tensioner. I don't really know. Thats the extent of my knowlege on that. The balancing shaft belt does still need to be tensioned with the "special tool 9201."
