Hi guys,
Just noticed this the other day.
As I pulled up to my house, my left front tire went over the tiny bump of the sidewalk to get on my driveway....and just as it did, I heard a popping noise from underneath the car. What could this be? The bump is about 1/2 and inch, and I was driving about 15km/h. What should I look for? Is there something loose??

Also, if I reverse very qucikly, and stop the car quickly, I hear the pop coming from the back...what's going on? could it be a loose axle or something!

Usually noises asociated with going over bumps in our cars are associated with sway bar bushings.

 

Try to determine where the clunk is coming from (corner)... maybe purposefully driving over bumps/cracks/etc. Give all the wheels a good shake (vertical and horizontal). Lift the car up and start yanking on everything. you'll find it, just a matter of time. Also, you have replaceable struts on the front... check to be sure the inserts are tight (screw-on caps tight). Some other common clunks come front wheel bearings and ball joints (A-arm).

The clunk from the front could be a # of things, I think Skips points out good things to check.

The noise from the back is likely your sliding calipers re-seating, when force is applied the opposite way (vs. when they're applied while going forward). I'd probably want to check at least the caliper bolts in the back, if not the whole assy. (In the last two weeks, I saw three friends cars with loose caliper bolts, shortly after being serviced at different places, kinda scary!) However, it could still be something like a stub axle in the back, but that's not very likely.

My car is in the shop now for, among other things, a front end noise (see my "clunk" thread from last week. BTW thanks to all for their help. the problem turned out to be a loose caliper, doubly embarasing as I did give it a little tug and still didn't catch it myself, and because I did the brakes last month so it's my own fault in the first place for not securing it better . OOPS

 

Thanks for all the info guys, I'll work on it this weekend and get back to everyone if I find the problem.
