Default MAF or MegaSquirt?

I have a 87 16 valve S and am not happy with the with the engines manners.

She runs pretty good at WOT but runs so rich it smokes. It runs OK at cruise
as well giving 19mpg in traffic and 27 on the highway. The problem area is
spirted driving, part throttle isn't smooth at all, mild surging, and throttle
response is just awful, heel and toe is kinda useless because of the delay.

I've neen looking at the Rogue Website and have seen other people mention
MAF replacements and am wondering if this is something I should be
looking into.

I also have a MegaSquirt (MS2) on the shelf from a old project, seems it will
work on this car with the 60-2 trigger. They also sell a breakout box so ]no wireing to be cut..

Any help would be great Thanks

I'd first try and solve the issue before swapping chips/airflow meters and or fuel interceptors. I wouldn't even bother with mega squirt IMO

Seems my DME has seen better days, someone has removed the adjustment
seal and the car ran awful when I finally got it running. I went though it,
opened it up cleaned, moved the contact to a clean area on the board,
replaced or checked all the temp sensors and checked to be sure the
FPR was working. I made huge strides from when I got the car but it's
just not right compared to more modern cars.

Part throttle at high rpm and full throttle need to be addressed.

Why so negative about MegaSuirt? It's worked well for me on several street
and race cars. I really like tuning with a Map sensor over this antique DME.

Nothing wrong with it, i just personally wouldn't do it.
The reason why you would want to find out what's wrong with it, is because if you do go MS and the problem is still there or worse because the symptoms will be different. Then for us it'll be harder to diagnose.

Here's a list I think you should go through and check:
- Coil
- Sparkplugs
- Leads
- Cap & Rotor
- run some injector cleaner
- change fuel filter

One of them is usually the cause of what you're saying at the moment. But running rich could be that the spark isn't strong enough.

Steve the DME can be bought up to date with the help of rogue tuning's products and that will be better than using the mega squirt is I think what is being suggested but I am not an expert. Rogues 3D mapping, data logging and tuning software has bought the *antiquated DME* very much into being a state of the art option

...or what Pauly said above lol

You say someone played with the DME

Did you make sure the FQS wasn't set to some weird fuel/timing setting?

+1 on getting it sorted first. I too have megasquirt experience, and it is a great platform to work from, but installing it into a an unsorted car in an attempt to fix driveability issues, sounds like a bad idea. You won't be able to tell if it is a tuning issue or a mechanical issue. I would only go this route if you can determine if some serious electrical issue is the cause ie bad afm/ecu, or some other part that is either very rare or too expensive to source to replace.

I had a similar issue when it rained here a few weeks ago. had my passenger window cracked and I was able to pour half a shot glass worth of water out of the DME. would idle around 3-500 rpm, partial was smooth, but WOT would bog down almost like someone was turning my car off by turning a **** down slowly all the way.

anyway, long story short, popped in a spare DME and she was back to normal. I would try to source a used DME and see if that fixes your problems. There were a few members who offered to let me borrow one when I was chasing a no spark problem a while back. Offer money as collateral and see if someone will help ya out

I plan on giving Jason a call tomorrow, his work is truly impressive. I would like to
keep the duel knock sensors, MegaSquirt always had issues with knock sensors. I'll
give Jason a call tomorrow..

In the mean time I'll pull the DME and see if the settings are still in the
stock location (full counter clock wise right??) While removing the decade
old cell phone wiring I took a look at the DME and it looked to be untouched.

A note, seems I have been using "DME" to refer to the stock airflow meter..
The airflow meter is what I had apart and repaired and so on..

Also according to Rogues site the stock coil may not be up to high rpm,
kinda doubt it's a problem but a new coil is cheap insurance, might as
well do wires at the same time. Cap and rotor are in good condition, plugs
are new.

Steve I think from the amazing feedback the Rogue set ups have been getting here, you will be very happy going that option. I know I pl;an to at some point. Although it won't hurt to change coil, and as you say it's cheap insurance, I would only replace it if you needed too, as OEM stuff tends to last a lot longer than on lesser cars and you will soon find plenty of ways to throw money at your car

I called Rouge today and got no return call after leaving a message....
Disappointing..

So there is nothing for the 16 valve cars yet, guess I have no other option then MegaSquirt then..

Anyone know what size injectors we have, low impedance or high?

Racerstev,
I did get your message - but the time-difference isn't doing us any favors... By the time I was available to call, I worried that it might be too late on your end.

And 16valver is correct, I do not currently have a kit for the S/S2. I am very close, but just not quite ready to open it up for sale.
