Replacing an early 85 944 transmission
Hi,
I have an early 1985 944 with a seized transmission. Can anyone tell me if the transmissions from the 84 to 89 944s will fit on my car? That is are they interchangeable? I ask because it seems to me an entire transmission replacement might be cheaper than a rebuild.
Thanks for any comments!

From what I know they should just bolt right up with no problems. However, the later transmissions have different gear ratios if I remember correctly. You will also have a couple extra electrical hook-ups on the later model transmissions that you will not need. These being from speedo and such.

Early transmissions have two major differences with late models.
1. The speedometer in the early 944 is driven off the front left wheel. The later cars (I presume 85.5 and later) the speedometer is driven off the transmission.
2. The early cars have two transmission mounts (left and right). The later cars have one mount on the top.
A late transmission will still fit an early 944, you just have to get mounts for an early car and possibly plug the speedometer hole (I'm guessing on that one).
The gear ratios in NA 944 (ie; non turbos) should be all the same. I can't speak for the S, S2, 88 and 89 2.7L models.

They are the same. the mounts are different as stated and the speedo on late models will not be used. I have an early tranny that works if you need one.

In the process of the same and i found what seems to be a nice S2 transmission, does anyone know how hard it is to change the early transmission mounts and replace them with the later?

The '85 has the "late style" mounting.
