Default Sweet supercharger sound after timing belt job

Just finished a timing belt job on my '84 NA and now my car sounds like it has a sweet supercharger. I remember reading somewhere on here that it's usually caused by either the Alternator or Balance Shaft belts being over tightened. But I can't seem to find where I read that. Just wondering which belt I might need to back off a tad.

Balance belt. A little tight is ok though, I keep mine just tight enough to hear that supercharger whine. As long as it's not too much

Thanks for the quick reply! I'll back the tensioner off just a bit as the sound is pretty pronounced.

Just FYI, The balance belt tension roller is tensioned CW to lower the BB below the WP waterpump pulley.

If the correct tension is applied via P9201 or Arnworx guage, will the BB's still whine?

Be sure you have the required gap (0.5MM) between the belt and the idler roller at the lower balance shaft pulley. This is the biggest source of the supercharger sound if it is really pronounced.

Yeah, I've been driving with mine like that since the 60k service a little more than a year ago. A quick search here showed that it's not a problem, it's just an annoyance. I'm dropping the car off for the annual, and I'll have them make the adjustment while they have it.

BB should be "no way that's too loose" tension. it's just a hair tighter than "whoah that skipped a tooth" tension

I have used the Krikit in the past on the BB but now I just pinch the BB with my thumb and finger. If it moves up and down at least an inch the tension is set. Caution YMMV (your results may vary).

I agree with turbodave--set the idler roller correctly--top and bottom.

Agree with the comments about setting the idler roller correctly. If it is spinning fast all the time while the car is idling then it will make a lot of noise. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the roller is only there to stop the belt from flapping. Mine is set so that it only comes in contact when I first open the throttle, then the belt settles down once the roller does its job and stops it flapping.

Ryan Kennedy in Holly Hill (Daytona), FL did my belts/pullies/H20 pump back at the beginning of April.

same exact result with respect to the sweet whine.

This was the source of my supercharger-like whine. Gapped it and the sound went away!

I wound up backing the tension off a bit and the sound disappeared. I do however, now want a supercharger...
