My radio reception sucks *** on my 88 NA and my research tells me this can be due to the preamplifier not being hooked back up after installing an aftermarket head unit. Where exactly is the preamplifier? I read that it's under the dash, but where? I couldn't find anything. What does it look like?

There's a small antenna booster that's hooked into the antenna lead and then to the radio. It's powered by 12v and is behind the glove box. I have the same issue that came from a windshield replacement and I think they didn't hook up the booster when they replaced it. I see them periodically on ebay. They're pretty simple to replace.

There should be a thin black wire coming off of the thick black antenna wire that you need to connect to the power antenna wire on your new deck.

I pulled the radio and I see the thin black wire coming off of the antenna plunged into a socket with 2 black/red striped wires that join into the nest of wires behind the radio. I sat astronaut style in my car and looked behind the glove box but I didn't see anything. I read that the box should say "Fuba" or something like that. Do I have to pull the dash to find this thing?

Edit- I found it. It looks like everything is hooked up correctly so I guess it's either this crappy head unit or the radio reception sucks to begin with... I removed the plug for the antenna from the head unit and cleaned up the connector and my reception for local stations is better, but still not amazing...
