Finally Bought One
I just bought a 84 944 with 89000 on the odometer. It's black with fuchs wheels, rear sway bar, and leather. It's got all its maitinance records and runs pretty well. I got a few questions about the car though.
First, the muffler is cracked and I need a replacement. I know I can buy a catback system but they are somewhat expensive. Has anybody had any luck with replacing just the muffler? If you did could you tell me what brand and how you did it?
Second, I have a 1/4 inch pipe coming from the exhaust pipe after the oxygen sensor but before the cat. This pipe was cracked and broken when we got the car and was held on by a bracket near the engine block. The other end of the pipe (the part near the engine block) had nothing on it and was just capped. What is this pipe? Is it supposed to be connected to something or is it some california emissions option thing?
BTW I'm not in California and the car never was registered there.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Good on yer' and good luck with the wheels!! I can't answer your immediate questions but if you go back or do the search you'll probably get more than you needed or want. Congratulations. I'm sure you will enjoy this car a bunch. If it's half as much as I enjoy mine, it'll be more than enough.
Keep the shiny side up,

The pipe is for measuring emissions. Not related to a California option. All cars have them.

Okay Luke, I'll do it.
I don't know if you have been following this board or not - but you SHOULD! if you want to succesfully own a 944. Anyway:
The "balance belts default" Luke mentioned is this: These engines are built such that if the timing belt breaks the valves will strike the pistons, bend valves to hell and, congratulations!...you're the winner of an extensive, multi-thousand dollar top end rebuild. Don't let this happen. You should have gotten full maintenance records on this car. If you do not have a record of when the timing & balance shafts belts were changed - and it doesn't indicate less than the last 30,000 miles - change them. DO NOT pass GO. Do it NOW. While you're there (has to come out anyway) change the water pump and thermostat too. Personally, I changed all fluids - coolant, brake, trans/rearend, etc hoses, belts and filters too. It's not cheap but the car will be (fingers crossed here) very reliable. Mine has. Good luck and enjoy. These aren't the fastest sports cars out there but they ARE the best handling ones and they are a LOT of car for the money.
