Post Engine Hoist, what/where to get?

I need to purchase an engine hoist. I have not had any luck finding them on line. Where can I get one. I do not want to spend more money than I need to, but I do want to purchase one.

Also, are thier different types of engine hoists? Do I need a certain type?

Check out http://www.harborfreight.com

I got one of their rope hoists and attached it to the giant beams on the ceiling of my garage and it worked great! You'd want to get one of those levelers too (to straighten things out).

HiTabor,

I bought a hoist for my 968 engine swap project. I bought mine from Trak Auto, I don't know if you have them on the West Coast but it was $200 and is the type that is self contained so you can roll it around. Very nice item!

You may also be able to borrow or rent one if you're doing only one job. Check your local trading newspaper, used hoists show up regularly around here.

I've used winches on garage beams and now own a cherry-picker type hoist. The winch works OK, but you have to pull the hood to use it, which is a drag, and then you need to move the car out from underneath in order to land the engine. The cherry picker gets in underneath the hood, and can be used to move engines and other heavy stuff around.

Buy a good quality tilter, it saves more aggravation than you might believe. Make sure that the hoist has adjustable legs so that you can get it under narrow cars. This also makes it easier to fold up against a wall for the 99% of time that you're not using a hoist.

If you don't already have one, you'll also want an engine stand. I find the three-wheeled T configuration to be dangerously tippy, go for four wheels.

If you go with the cherry picker look for one that will allow you to fold up the legs and still move it arround. This makes it a lot easier to put it out of the way when it is not in use. My load leveler jas beem handy for changing the angle of the engine when installing it. --Roy--

I've heard from several sources that pulling a 944 engine out of the top is not the best way to go, that it's easier to pull it out through the bottom.

So:
Which is it? I'd love to hear that it goes in and out of the top, myself...

Yes, I already have a 4 wheeled engine stand that the block is on right now.

I've seen it both ways and they're equivalent time wise I think. A lot of people are adamant about reversing the factory procedure. But it's kind of tough for us to completely remove our suspensions and lift the body off the drivetrain with a giant robot.

I just pulled my engine out the top today, I managed to get it out by myself without too many dramas. I picked up an AC DELCO engine lift for $220 from Auto Parts O'Reilly (Texas) a few weeks ago. It did a good job - I found that using an engine tilter was very useful too ($29 from on-tool or direc tool, can't remember which)

I'll take a pic and post it shortly.

Wayne.

There are two locations for attaching the chains. One is at the back of the cam housing and the other is to the left of the alternator.

Tabor,

I have an almost new engine hoist and tilt bar available in Southern California. $125 for both.

Don't know whether this helps you. It probably won't pay to get it from Cleveland.

Tabor,
You can get hoists at this site, they will ship anywhere. Also your local auto parts place may have some in stock and you might not have to pay so much in freight. I have a 2 ton made in china fold up that I bought a couple years ago for around 200 bucks. Has the fold up legs. Doug
