Default My Flipkey Project

Hello All,

Just wanted to share the recent flipkey project results. The images below will explain the project, what I did, and what was changed.

I started a fresh thread here after reading the 11year old "flip key things" located at:
https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-...-things-5.html

Project items:
Flipkey blade $3.14 each
Flipkey case $10.00
1 can of PlasticDip spray $4.00

Optional LED
2pack SPST Pushbutton switch $2.50
1 diode under $2.00
1 LED of your liking under $2.00
2 lithium batteries CR2016 under $3.60

1. Locate a flipkey case for the project. eBay and Amazon has lots!
I needed a case that would be big enough to support my aftermarket alarm fob. Try to find a case that matches the size of your alarm fob if possible if your going to be transferring the internal electronic to the flip key case. The flipkey blades are found on eBay using keywords like:
"Blank Remote Key for Volkswagen Scirocco Fox"
"mk1 flip key blades"
Found some for $3.14 each instead of $9.00, and even $20.00!
I needed to keep the price down!

2. Our wide key blades don't fit the narrow channel of these newer flipkey cases. So I reduced the sides of the blade to make it work. All was well but a bit on the sloppy(a bit too much play) side when locking/unlocking door, yet it still worked.

3. Putting in an unshaved blade means you'll have to cut/sand/file the sides of the case where the blade is a bit too wide. I went overboard and shaved too much off. I built the sides up by adding a small strip of Gorilla blue tape to the sides. Afterwards a few layers of Plasticdip, and it was good to go. It's solid, the blade when flipped out is firm without any play.

4. After searching for a few months I was surprised that no one made a flipkey case with a light. Probably cause most newer cars have remote unlock so no need to see where your putting the key in the dark. With this project I really didn't want to lose the LED that I had in the Porsche key head. So off to RadioShack!

5. Getting everything in there wasn't an issue, it was tight cause space is very limited. Still looking for small enough push button replacement but what I have does work.

nice idea but the case looks pretty bad , you should fill in all the rough spots sand it smooth and paint it.

Interesting write up. Agree with Catamax though, that case looks awful.

Really dont want to rain on your parade but you can buy a flip key and blank that works for $12 or so from here.

And they have complete kits too. I installed one of their setups about a year ago - works well.

It's all good folk, no rain on the parade for sure, just sharing a DIY project.
Didn't get this type of constructive feedback when I asked a month ago so I simply fashioned one to my liking.

The added info is good, and anyone looking to do this now has more info via this thread, and the helpful uk link provided. Keep sharing, and our community will grow!

Live long enough you learn to meet your objective, as well as being in a state of mind that your going to have that picnic or parade come rain or shine

My apologies - I took some time away from the board when I was laid off to concentrate on finding a job..

No apologies needed CurtP, you have helped and shared greatly over the years.

Can that rightclick product be integrated with the factory powerlocks?
