Post Engine cleaning

I'm doing a Head rebuild on Saturday, and I am probably going to need to de-coke the top of the pistons / valves etc. Does anyone have any good recommendations on how to do this?

Also, I am going to have to drain the cooling system, Does anyone have any good tips on what to look for on antifreeze containers to know that it's good for the ally.

As long as it is phosphate free you should be ok.

I use Prestone phosphate-free antifreeze, and I've had excellent results. Of course, with the hoses that keep bursting under pressure on my car (twice now) - the system gets purged and re-filled way too often.

As for cleaning the tops of the pistons, you might not find that much carbon on them when you pull the head. Even after 87K of poorly-maintained miles prior to the rebuild, my engine's piston tops were very clean.

If you DO clean them, make sure you use aluminum-safe cleaning solution. Test it on the shiny-side of aluminum foil first if you're not sure, as that will show the bad reaction very quickly if it's incompatible. Stay away from abrasive cleaning methods (scrapers, steel wool, etc).

I was told to use an old credit card, but I have never done it before. Is this a good idea?

Tabor - this is off subject, but how did you manage to hold on to/get "porsche" in your homepage URL. I was under the impression that PCNA shut down everything due to the intellectual property standards. I was checking your profile and noticed. Just curious, as even Porschelist was forced to change.

They haven't found it yet. I don't think they have the right to shut down virtual hosts. If they try I will probably yeild, just becasue I don't have money for a lawyer.

To scrape the carbon build up off. I was told it was soft enough not to hurt anything.
