Vibration in rear of 88' 944
My 88’ 944 develops a loud vibration that sounds like it is coming from the rear end of the car. The vibration only happens at around 3200 to 3400 RPM. It happens in any gear including neutral. Any advice would be great...Thanks!

Check the health of your clutch disc. Is it the original... rubber center?
To test for rubber-center clutch failure:
- Jack up rear of car
- ensure tranny is out of gear (neutral) and clutch is engaged (not-depressed)
- Remove trapezoidal rubber inspection cover from front of transaxle
- reach in and try to twist the drive shaft
If it turns more than a degree or two, the rubber vibration isolation damper on the clutch disc is destroyed... either partially or completely.
Symptoms of rubber center failure:
- acceleration/deceleration lurching (more noticable on decelaration.
- vibration in the drivetrain around 3000 RPM.
- Clutch will not engage (rubber pieces interupting the friction surface)
- Burnt rubber smell or rubber pieces from bell housing area.
What now:
- The rubber center of the clutch provides damping for the drivetrain. When the rubber disintigrates there are metal cogs which will continue to drive the shaft. This is sometimes referred to as "limp-home mode" and is meant to only last long enough until proper repairs can be made. You will have to replace the clutch very soon. Otherwise, it may leave you stranded as the metal cogs give way.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
