Default '84 944 Timing Mark Issues

I am attempting to do a water pump/belt job on my recently purchased 944, and have run into a snag. I lined the mark with "OT" stamped next to it up with the pointer in the top bellhousing window. However, the cam sprocket does not seem to be aligned properly. It looks like the distributor rotor is pointed to the #3 cylinder, and there is no cam sprocket timing mark visible in the timing window.

Can the flywheel be installed in multiple orientations, possibly causing the timing mark to not indicate the correct crankshaft position? I know this car has had the clutch replaced in its past and I believe it also had a timing belt break at some point.

When I bought this car about 2 weeks ago I drove it home a couple hundred miles, and it seemed to run fine.

There is a locating peg (dowel) on the crankshaft that should guarantee the flywheel is put on in the correct orientation. If someone left the peg out....

I will turn the engine over another rotation; looks like that is probably the problem. Thanks for the info.

If the engine is timed properly, whenever the OT is visible, the cam will be at TDC. The cam rotates at half crank speed so it would be possible to see the cam mark and not the crank, but not the other way around. Highly doubtful that the flywheel locating pin is not there, also.

I would remove the cam gear cover and see where the timing mark is so you can see how far off it is. How did the car run?

Are you sure that that was/is the OT mark? That mark looks like the "wide" mark that you would see at the bottom of the bell housing when you are at top dead.
