Tabor is right with the spring clutch. Also, get the 12 (star) sockets for the Axles and the pressure plate. the PP bolts have small heads so if they strip, most likely, then you can just drill them out. All the same go get a set of new ones anyway. It's a good investment. while you are in there best change that rear seal. (trust me! that is something you don't want to go bad after you have done all that work!) think about all the other parts too. slave cylinder, bearings, resurfacing the fly, you know all the little stuff that most don't plan for... Good luck!

try vertexauto.com for the clutch parts. They sella powerfriction clutch for 389. It includes the pressure plate, clutch disk and throw out bearing, its cheap and the disk is supposed to be made of better material than the sachs, the pressure plate and throw out bearing are sachs.

I agree with Andre, all though I did not do the job myself, the local transmission shop let me order the parts and they installed.I ordered from Vertex the spring centered clutch kit that consists of a Ferodo clutch disc,Sachs pressure plate and throwout bearing for $389.00 and I am very happy with the results.

The clutch is probably one of the weakest links on the 951. I had that same unit installed at vertex and after 6 months of agressige driving it is already starting to come apart. The labor is so expensive that is better to spend more money and delay the time that it will take to replace it. try a centerforce or turbo cup clutch, they are not much more and it is definetly worth the extra flow.
Check out NOPI, I think that the centerforce is less than 6 bills and grabs like a moe foe!!

Can the cup clutch setup be used on an 944 NA, or do you have to switch to a 951 flywheel? I thought I have read of people using the cup clutch disk with the standard clutch components, any comments? I'll be doing a clutch on my 89 NA in the near future, don't want to do it twice!

Thanks for all of the info. Sounds like a good idea with the cup clutch... I wonder. If anyone finds out, I'll be glad to be the gineau pig.

By the way "Randolphs" name is actually Jon, he is 12 years old and doesn't even own a 944. He is also mildly retarded so be nice to him.

Mike, I know you sit right behind me at work.

Here's how it is. Mikey got a car out of a cracker jack box that resembles a 944. So he can say "I own a 944". Really he hates his 944 and is looking to buy a TRUCK and give his 944 to his wife. She still has to learn how to drive a standard. I guess that is why he posted this on my clutch question.?

When he moves back to the states, he wants to get another Miata... really!

He actually does own a beautiful and immaculate '82 944. It is pretty nice, but we still can't understand why he was more than a few seconds SLOWER than me at the last PCA slalom.

Hmmm.... Can you say jelousy. Mike can.
