It worked well to get mine back in the ballpark..
My 87 S seems to average 15ish going 9 miles each way to work in traffic,
24ish at 75-80mph...

Three Wheelin'
There are some fundamental flaws with adjusting the Afm as shown in the link o adjust the afr. The dme is almost always in closed loop on part throttle (cruise). The dme learns the trim required to the dme maps to achieve afr = 14.7. Adjusting the afm will be learned around by the dme if the system is working correctly. There is something wrong with your O2 sensor or the afm is faulty resulting in the dme trying to compensate. You should also check the tps as sometimes these fail and they get stuck on wot mode which doesn't use closed loop. I would check the tps first.

I just cut the signal wire coming from the O2 sensor, cut on the sensor side
of the plug.
Before I tried the adjustment I removed the unit and freed the adjuster up,
also cleaned the wiper up with an eraser..
One last thing that worked for me, be sure to use good gas or the car will
run pretty poorly and seemed to dump extra fuel trying to keep ping at
bay.
