For a while I have noticed a fix for the fuel guage not at full after filling is to remove the sender, and "shake it around" to "knock the scale" or whatever off. I have been determining when I fill based on miles driven. After a fill the guage can read anywhere on the scale. I don't think I saw it at full after a fill except for one time in 10 years.
Sunday I was going to take it out and try. I noticed a bunch of dust and crap on top of the sender before I removed it. So, I vacuumed it out, and tried to get all the foreign stuff off it. I then disconnected the wires, and lightly cleaned the terminals and lugs with a fine sandpaper, and cleaned further with a spray brake cleaner. Since then the guage has been rock steady and correct.
I don't know if I have that other problem of a scale buildup, but my fix (for now) seems to be working.
