Loctite 574, 270, 638
I recently acquired an '86 944 turbo and am currently in the process of re-sealing the engine, replacing rod-bearings, wide fire head gasket, pads, rotors, clutch master/slave, tires, refinishing wheels, etc. etc.
Anyways, the factory manual specs loctite 574 anaerobic sealant for the oil pump to crankcase and balance shaft to crankshaft. I am having trouble locating loctite 574 locally. Surely there has been some development in sealants in the last fifteen years. I'm looking for a recommendation of a different sealant to use for this.
Also, factory specs loctite 270 for some threadlocking applications. I assume that this is basically "red" loctite. Agreed?
Finally, I disassembled the oilpump assembly. It seems that the factory specs loctite 638. This is some kind of "retaining adhesive to hold the oilpump internal assembly in the oilpump housing. I've tried to source this locally and have been unable to locate it. Any proper suggestions.
Obviously anaerobic gasket maker, red loctite, and super glue might do the trick. But, in this case, I think that discretion is the better part of valor.
I have been unable to source any of these loctite products locally (Seattle, former home of Boeing).

I got Loctite 574 from Performance Products out there on the left coast. $26 for the bottle, took forever to get here 'cause they have to ground ship it. Might get to you faster. They sell a couple other Loctite sealers and the full line of Curil, should cover all your needs. You just have to order it is all. I couldn't find a local source out here (Boston).

574 still exists:

270 still exists (though 262 is more common):

638 still exists:

If you go to the Loctite web site (www.loctite.com) they have a distributor locator that keys off your zip. You should be able to find a friendly shop that will order these for you. I have had very good luck with Tacoma Screw, who has many offices in and around the Seattle/Tacoma area.
Good Luck!

I don't have the factory manual handy, so I can't quote chapter/verse, but I recall the oil pump assembly replacing the 638 with the 574 ... both anaerobic. We did our engine this past summer, and used the 574 on the balance shaft covers and the oil pump ( I think that was the only places). We got our 574 from Vertex. When we took our pump appart to inspect the internals, it appeared that a 574 type sealer was used.
On the 270 / Red issue, they are the same ... the high strength flavor (versus the low strength blue and purple flavors).

Hi Steve, Last spring I resealed my upper balance shaft housing when I had my turbo rebuilt. Since I couldn't locate 574 locally, I used Permatex High Temp Red Silicone Sealant. So far, it has not leaked a drop in 3000 miles.

I check the factory manual, and the interchanging of the 638 and the 574 was relative to the balance shaft covers, not the oil pump assy as I had originaly thought. Either way, the 574 can be used on both the covers and the oil pump.

Thanks for the help. I had tried the loctite distributor directory, but was unable to find anyone that had it in stock. I ended up ordering the 574 through a local place and should have it in a couple of days.
