Post Koni "bolt-in" strut cartridge

For those curious souls out there wondering about the new sealed strut alternative from Koni (8641-1414S), we have an instruction page up at Tech-Session to give a peek at the procedure.

Koni "bolt-in" Strut Cartridge Installation

These have just arrived, so we'll soon have a better example with actual pictures and any "wisdom" gained, as well as a possible exchange program.

The new struts will also come with the necessary instructions on paper (paper? what's that?)

Have a great weekend!

Uh, Skip, the first line of the instruction is: "Remove the complete suspension unit from the car."

This isn't too encouraging. Perhaps a little more detail would be less intimidating?...

Man, why'd they stop makin' the old ones...

That refers to the MacPhereson strut assembly... consists of the strut, spring, and tower mount. This is the same amount of stuff removed to replace the sealed strut also.

To save you ~$100 per strut

Are these single-tube high-pressure gas units? Or are they double-tube like the old ones?

Hey Skip, does that hole have to be drilled precisely (ie with a lathe) or can I do it in my garage?

Some answers:

- free? - nice try
- how much? - depending on retailer, $150ea
- type? - 8641-1414S = externally Single-adjustable (rebound), Twin Tube Low Pressure Gas. The same as the early insert, and the late sealed. 8641 is the designator for the above info, and the fact that this is a strut cartridge, rather than a sealed complete unit (8741). 1414 is the version for 944/968. S is for "Sport".
- drilling? - No machine shops needed, but you should do your best. The centering of the pilot hole is essential to proper installation. We suggest you use a machinists ruler or suitably precise device... and "measure twice, cut once".
- [Also, no one asked here, but have off-line]: How is the "cut" top finished off? - Koni provides all the hardware items needed for conversion, including a cap to hide the cut.

BTW, the procedure will continuously be updated as new information arrives... for instance, tonight's change is: "expect a small escape of air and oil when drilling the 3mm relief hole in the sealed strut case. These struts are low pressure gas charged."

2nd BTW, I just got off my shift and it WAS NOT a good tip night. Folks must think I wear this skirt and push-up bra for my own benefit... Denny's still rocks!

BPBevins, the M030 924S actually had a rebuildable strut from the factory that used a Koni insert. The proper application for that strut will be the 8641-1038 Sport.Paragon Products jason@paragon-products.com
