Default car restarts after turned off!

I have searched and haven’t found much about this. I am thinking it may be the DME relay.

Sometimes when I shut the car off the rpm goes to 0 and with the key off the car starts back up and shuts off right away. then when I go to restart it takes about 4-5 sec to start again. it seems like it uses the rest of the fuel in the lines when it does it and that’s why it takes so long to restart.

this happens randomly and nothing specific causes it.

its a 1985.5 944 N/A with about 90k miles (mint cond.)

Your fuel pump check valve might be stuck open.

I'd consider the DME (fuel pump) relay first, since it's easier to swap ($20) than pulling the fuel pump. If not that, then Pops may well be right. Relays are known to hang up and cause weird symptoms.

Also consider your ignition switch....

Check your starter connections. They might be causing it as well. It's has happened before, a 944 has hit something in the road and soon after develops the 'ghost starting 944' effect.

It's not the starter. It doesn't engage again, it just refires.... I will try the DME relay. It doesn't bother me too much, just another thing that embarrasses me when I'm in public.

When it restarts itself in public just tell people "What can I say? They love to be driven."

If it isn't the DME relay you may want to check the wiring harness for fraying, cracking, etc.
