Matt,

taken care of.

Tabor.

I agree with you. the S2 did have the upgraded (turbo) brakes.

I guess it is important that we all specify which cars we are talking about. The 89 944 16v is an S2 not just S.

Whats the factory quote for an 86' 951. I think it was 6 sec. Well I wouldn't use these as comparisons. I ran a 5.2 (with moderate clutch slippage and a broken Blow off valve) on stock boost and a stock engine.
It's all about the "feel". There are good and bad examples of each. Besides, shorter gearing can make a less powerful car feel just as fun.
Whatever you get, get a NICE one!

ps. IF you get the na. I think the popular mod is the throttle response cam.

Food for thought:

When the 951 and the 944S were new Bruce Anderson recommended people buy a 944S R&P for their stock turbos. Putting a shorter R&P in was the hot setup on 930's so he thought it would be just as great in the 951. Problem was the short R&P used in 930s was a 800hp endurance race proven 935 part! The 944S R&P is not. Anyway you should check out PCA's "upfixin der Porsche" (sorry can't remember which edition) to see the results of putting the S R&P in a turbo were, but Bruce Anderson recended his endorsement of this mod and noone who knows anything will do it. If as Jon Anderson says that the Super Charged 944n/a will make enough power/torque to blow a stock or ever chipped 951 away...944S R&P=

As has been mentioned above, before contemplating the supercharged approach you should wait and see what happens. 500miles is nothing in terms of reliability testing.

Whenever someone asks: Should I turbo my non-turbo car, the response from the experts is always "sell it and buy a factory turbo" with good reason.

The 951 was engineered to be boosted, thus forged rods and pistons, and a lower compression ratio more sophisticated electronics etc, etc.

If a supercharger is as great, why does'nt Porsche (or anyone else) use them in all their endurance racecars?

And last but not least:

The #1 rule of modifying cars...It will cost more, make less power, take longer, and be less reliable than you think.

Thumbs up

Thanks to all for your replies...I was looking for a daily driver mileage getter when I started this search. I may still pick up the 944S and just use it stock until I decide longterm what to do. I can always keep it stock for an autoX car for my wife/son. Two grand for a Porsche that will out perform most of the 30K+ "sports coupes" on the road is unbeatable.

I just can't contemplate being without a Porsche once the GTS is gone for good. Again, thanks to all who chimed in.

Less certain than ever now...951 or 944S2?

...I've run across an 87S for around $2K

Ross,

As I stated earlier. We need to be specific on which model we are talking about! You started out talking about an 87 944S but you mention the 944S2. The 944S and the 944S2 ARE DIFFERENT CARS!
They share many likenesses but are different in a comparison. Which are you talking about?

Andrew,

Sorry to confuse everyone. I changed the model at the end of the post b/c from the advice I received the S2 would be a better comparison to the 951. I was stating that now I was looking at the S2...

Good, it was destined in your fate. Once you get a 951, you won't bother looking at anything else.
